Visiting Fellowships

The LPGCCA offers visiting fellowships under a number of streams. Interested researchers are encouraged to read over the below to determine the most suitable stream.

All Visiting Fellows are integrated into the Laureate Program, including attendance at team research meetings, policy roundtables, workshops and work-in-progress seminars. Fellows have the opportunity to workshop and receive feedback from the team on their own work and to receive mentoring during their visit from Professor Peel. The chance to participate in other events run by Melbourne Law School and Melbourne Climate Futures is also offered. Fellows are provided with a workspace, and access to University of Melbourne spaces and facilities, such as libraries and study areas across campus.

Applicants must hold a PhD* (generally awarded within the past ten years) or have professional experience equivalent to a PhD, and a maximum of 10 years research experience at a university, research institute or NGO. (Periods of career interruption can be excluded from the 10-year limit.)

*In recognition of the fact that the PhD can figure differently in women’s career pathways, applications from women who are still enrolled in a PhD will be considered, if they also concurrently hold a post at a university or research institution and/or have additional prior professional experience in a relevant field.

Visiting Fellowship applications are now open, with a closing date of 13 October 2025.

  • The Kathleen Fitzpatrick Visiting Fellowship Scheme supports outstanding women researchers (particularly early and mid-career) from any discipline in the humanities and social sciences, working on research relevant to the aims of the Laureate Program.

For these funded fellowships we particularly encourage applications from Global South scholars working on topics related to climate litigation and accountability in Latin America, Africa, South and South-East Asia, the Caribbean and Pacific jurisdictions, or on such initiatives in international forums.

Under the scheme, there are three separate streams, as detailed below:

    Kathleen Fitzpatrick Senior Visiting Fellows

    • Mid-career or senior female scholars

    • Eligible for $8000 funding support towards accommodation and travel.

    Kathleen Fitzpatrick ECR Visiting Fellows

    • Early-career female scholars who are from the Global South OR researching Global South countries.

    • Eligible for $10,000 funding support towards accommodation and travel.

Kathleen Fitzpatrick Unfunded Visiting Fellows (2 per year)

    • Female scholars who self-fund their visit to the LPGCCA.

    • Like all visiting fellows, unfunded fellows are integrated into the program during their stay and enjoy affiliation with the LPGCCA.

  • The LPGCCA offers one visiting fellowship per year open to all researchers* working on research relevant to the aims of the Laureate Program

    • Eligible for $8000 in funding support towards accommodation and travel.

    • Like all visiting fellows, researchers under this stream are integrated into the program during their stay and enjoy affiliation with the LPGCCA.

(*note that female researchers will automatically be eligible for consideration under the Kathleen Fitzpatrick Scheme)

  • I am still completing my PhD - can I still apply?

Possibly. Recognising that the PhD can figure differently in women’s career pathways, applications will be considered from applicants who are still enrolled in a PhD if they also concurrently hold a post at a university or research institution and/or have additional prior professional experience in a relevant field. However, please be aware that the purpose of the Kathleen Fitzpatrick Fellowship Scheme is not for Professor Peel to provide supervision for your PhD project but rather to provide opportunities for participation in the activities of the Laureate team and mentoring of your research as an early career researcher.

Male researchers applying to the Annual Visiting Fellowship Scheme must have completed their PhD to apply or have equivalent professional experience to a PhD (for example, an academic appointment at a university or research institute). More detail below.

    I don't have a PhD, nor am I enrolled in a PhD - can I still apply?

In this case, your eligibility will depend on your professional experience and whether it can be gauged as equivalent to a PhD. Some examples of equivalent professional experience may be:

    • Several years of experience in a research role at a University, research-focused NGO or research institute in a field of direct relevance to the LPGCCA.

    • Several years of experience in the private sector in roles of direct relevance to the LPGCCA and which have a focus on research activities.
