Kathleen Fitzpatrick Visiting Fellowships

The Kathleen Fitzpatrick Visiting Fellowship scheme supports outstanding early and mid-career women researchers from any discipline in the humanities and social sciences, working on research relevant to the aims of the Laureate Program.

Kathleen Fitzpatrick Visiting Fellows are integrated into the Laureate Program, including attendance at team research meetings, policy roundtables, workshops and bi-monthly work-in-progress seminars. They will have the opportunity to workshop a draft and receive feedback from the team on their own work, to receive mentoring during their visit from Professor Peel, and have the chance to participate in other events and seminars run by Melbourne Law School and Melbourne Climate Futures during the course of their visit. They will be provided with a workspace, and access to University of Melbourne spaces and facilities, such as libraries and study areas across campus.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a PhD (generally awarded within the past ten years) or have professional experience equivalent to a PhD, and up to 10 years research experience at a university, research institute or NGO. (Periods of career interruption can be excluded from the 10-year limit.)

In recognition of the fact that the PhD can figure differently in women’s career pathways, applications from women who are still enrolled in a PhD will be considered, if they also concurrently hold a post at a university or research institution and/or have additional prior professional experience in a relevant field.

Funding

Between 2025-2030, we are offering up to ten funded Kathleen Fitzpatrick Visiting Fellowships, each worth $AUD10,000

For these funded fellowships we particularly encourage applications from Global South scholars working on topics related to climate litigation and accountability in Latin America, Africa, South and South-East Asia, the Caribbean and Pacific jurisdictions, or on such initiatives in international forums.

Funds can only be used towards accommodation and travel (not Visa fees). Therefore, an applicant may be required to part-self-fund or secure additional funding elsewhere for the visit.

There will also be up to two unfunded fellowships per year. Applicants who do not require funding, if selected, will receive the same title and privileges. Applicants will be responsible for securing and funding their own visas.
